Universities handle data with significant value to others, including sensitive research, intellectual property and personal data.

This makes academic institutions a major cyber crime target for both state-sponsored actors with significant resources and a sophisticated approach, and independent cyber criminals looking for opportunities to commit fraud or monetise stolen material.

Universities are particularly vulnerable as they are very open and outward-facing.
