Office 2016 will be Microsoft’s 13th formal iteration of its ubiquitous business software (estimated to now be used by over 1 billion people) since its initial launch [Microsoft Office for Windows] over 20 years ago. Office 2016, often referred to as Office 16 (which ties in neatly with Office 15 – released in 2013), is right on schedule to be launched three years following the last version.
Microsoft Office 2016 is a ‘ground-up’ new build of Office designed specifically around a cloud-first, mobile-first strategy. In Microsoft’s own words ‘the company has reimagined the traditional office experience…and Office 2016 is expected to play an increasingly lesser role when compared to Office 365”. This makes sense and chimes neatly with the company’s subscription-based services strategy.
There are many new features, critically however for Mac Users, Microsoft has recently announced that Mac Users will be able to enjoy the full power of Office, just like Windows users. “It [Office 2016] is designed to take advantage of the unique features of the Mac like full retina display support with thousands of retina-optimised graphics, full screen native immersive experiences, and even little Mac affordances like scroll bounce”.
