Management consultancy firm transforms legacy IT estate with a ‘Microsoft-first’ approach

Cambridge Econometrics is a world-class economic consultancy with offices in several countries across Europe. The company sought a secure update to its legacy systems that would enable it to improve integration among its offices and allow employees to work on the move, as well as at home. Due to the sensitive nature of its business and the need to maintain confidentiality of its data, cloud security was a critical concern. Softwerx provided a complex cloud migration for a client that needed a secure, flexible IT system. The process of migration was seamless, and the client is now enjoying the many benefits of its cloud upgrade and security enhancements.

  • Challenge

Legacy software was on-premise and not remote-enabled or secure

  • Benefits

Resilient and remote-work enabled IT infrastructure

  • Client challenges

Cambridge Econometrics was using an on-premises IT architecture, and it wanted to modernise by moving to a secure cloud environment. The solution would also need to enable users to work remotely and allow its multiple offices to collaborate efficiently across time zones. Legacy systems, such as Lotus Notes, were not cloud synchronised and telephony was not cloud enabled.

  • Softwerx solution

Lotus Notes was replaced by Microsoft 365, providing significantly more email storage and improving search and synchronisation capabilities.
The on-premises server was migrated to Microsoft Azure cloud to allow remote access. SharePoint Online and OneDrive were also rolled out to provide shared document storage and remote access. In addition, Business Voice and Teams were set up to give users access to enhanced telephony, instant messaging, and team collaboration channels.

Security and resilience was critical, so the security features of Azure and Microsoft 365 were configured to include activation of user multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect against possible breaches. Softwerx also ensured that Econometrics makes regular backups using Microsoft Azure Cloud Backup, and configured site recovery to a second secure zone as a failover in the event of a major power outage.

Client benefits

The client benefitted from the rollout of a highly secure, integrated, cloud-based system that leverages Microsoft best practice to meet its complex business requirements. Because security was a priority for Cambridge Econometrics, Softwerx ensured the highest standards of a ‘Microsoft-first’ security implementation across the entire system architecture. Single sign-on via Microsoft Entra enables a single portal to manage identity access, thus facilitating a Zero Trust security architecture.

This allowed the company to transition to predominantly remote and at-home work in response to recent COVID-19 restrictions. The client runs multiple offices and the deployment also helped boost international collaboration. By using a cloud-based approach, employees can now share files from anywhere, allowing real-time collaboration on documents. Email lag times have also been reduced by switching to Teams, speeding up turnaround times on projects. Cambridge Econometrics is now a fully cloud-enabled and cloud-secure company.
